Engine Crew Work Day - January 10th

No Snow, but it was a brisk 5 degrees with 15mph winds at workday start. Dan Silbaugh providing morning briefing on tasks.

Vintage heating raised the Stall 6 thermometer from 15 to 30 degree by the end of the day.

Kate #4 Progress

In Dan Silbaugh’s words, Saturday was fantastically productive. Steve Burt brought his crane truck, so we concentrated on the removal of the air compressor and its bracket from Kate #4 first. The first job was to get the truck inside the Roundhouse and move Kate enough for the crane to reach the targets. This involved opening the Stall #3 doors, which was not exciting thermally. We got the compressor off, and its bracket.

In next photo, notice the water marks coming from the top two holes for the compressor bracket. Those two holes were the ones that had straight bolts put in them. Compare those to the 1912 original Baldwin studs below them, that are not leaking. This should be a pretty easy fix, the studs are the same as the mud ring studs (7/8” 3/4” per foot taper, 12 threads per inch to a 7/8-9 outside thread).

Another major task completed and maybe more interesting (at least more interesting to watch), we rigged up the locomotive’s brakes (which have never worked in Como). After a little oil and elbow grease we have the brake cylinders and brake rigging working! Steve Burt & Jon Dierksheide rigging up Machine Shop air compressor hose to brake manifold.

Additional tasks included machining of unique locomotive parts, identification, and cleaning of additional steam valves and piece parts. Jim Vanore on Bridgeport Mill. Newly identified valves after cleaning. Both with sand blasting and by hand. Tina Bogani points out the Tee that she cleaned.

Lunch!! Clockwise from top: Siegfried, Bob P., Steve, Jimmy, Tim, Mike A., Jim V., James & Jon. Jonah is behind stove.

Thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to another successful workday!
